    Summary

    A novel compound, terreic acid, isolated from Aspergillus terreus, demonstrates antimicrobial activity against specific bacteria, including Xanthomonas species. This compound also exhibits anti-tumor effects on human carcinoma cells and provides survival benefits in mice with Ehrlich ascites carcinoma.

    Background:

    • Aspergillus species are known producers of secondary metabolites with diverse biological activities.

    Purpose of the Study:

    • To isolate and identify a bioactive substance from Aspergillus sp. No. Y-8980.
    • To characterize the antimicrobial and antitumor properties of the isolated compound.

    Main Methods:

    • Morphological identification of Aspergillus sp. No. Y-8980.
    • Fermentation in sucrose-yeast extract medium, followed by solvent extraction (chloroform, ethyl acetate, n-butanol).
    • Crystallization, physico-chemical analysis, determination of Minimum Inhibitory Concentrations (MICs), LD50, and in vitro/in vivo antitumor assays.

    Main Results:

    • The isolated substance was identified as terreic acid.
    • Terreic acid exhibited significant MICs against Gram-positive bacteria, Gram-negative bacteria, Xanthomonas oryzae, and Xanthomonas citri.
    • Terreic acid induced morphological degeneration in HeLa cells and demonstrated a survival effect in mice with Ehrlich ascites carcinoma.
