    Area of Science:

    • Psychiatry and Mental Health
    • Systems Biology
    • Clinical Psychology

    Background:

    • Schizophrenia presents a complex clinical picture with multiple contributing factors.
    • The disorder's course is characterized by several semi-independent functional aspects, increasing its complexity.

    Purpose of the Study:

    • To develop an operational systems model for schizophrenia.
    • To provide a structured framework for understanding the complexities of schizophrenia's occurrence and outcome.

    Main Methods:

    • Employed principles of multiaxial diagnosis.
    • Utilized findings from an intensive qualitative study of individuals with schizophrenia.
    • Developed the model from an empirical base.

    Main Results:

    • Construction of an operational systems model for schizophrenia.
    • Empirical grounding of the model through qualitative data.

    Conclusions:

    • The multiaxial diagnostic approach provides a structure for understanding schizophrenia's complexity.
    • An operational systems model, based on empirical findings, can aid in managing the multifaceted nature of schizophrenia.
