    Summary

    This study investigated if vitamin E protects against paraquat poisoning in rats. Results showed vitamin E did not reduce mortality or lung damage from paraquat exposure.

    Background:

    • Paraquat is a toxic herbicide causing severe lung damage.
    • Vitamin E (d, alpha-tocopherol acetate) is an antioxidant with potential protective properties.

    Purpose of the Study:

    • To evaluate the efficacy of vitamin E in mitigating paraquat-induced toxicity in male rats.

    Main Methods:

    • Male rats received paraquat injections at the LD50 dose.
    • Vitamin E was administered either before or after paraquat exposure in two different schedules.
    • Mortality and lung pathology were assessed over 7 and 30 days.

    Main Results:

    • Vitamin E treatment did not significantly alter the 7-day mortality rate.
    • No reduction in characteristic pathological lung changes was observed in vitamin E-treated rats compared to controls.
    • Light microscopy confirmed the absence of protective effects on lung tissue.

    Conclusions:

    • Vitamin E, administered at the tested dosages and schedules, does not offer protection against acute paraquat poisoning in male rats.
    • The antioxidant properties of vitamin E were insufficient to counteract paraquat-induced lung injury in this model.
