    Summary

    Self-reported diving experience is often inaccurate. Overestimating dives, especially deep or cold ones, correlated with more diving accidents, suggesting caution in using self-reports for critical decisions.

    • To assess the validity of self-reported diving experience among U.S. Navy divers.

    • 49 U.S. Navy divers estimated frequency of four diving categories.
    • Estimates were correlated with official Navy diving records.
    • Divers were grouped by overestimation level (Low, Medium, High) and compared for accidents.

    • High and Medium overestimation groups had substantially more diving accidents per total dive than the Low group.

    • Discrepancies between estimated and actual experience may indicate increased accident risk.
    • Findings suggest potential utility in diver selection and assignment based on experience overestimation.
