    Area of Science:

    • Industrial hygiene
    • Occupational health
    • Environmental chemistry

    Background:

    • N-nitrosamines are a class of chemicals with known carcinogenic potential.
    • Occupational exposure to N-nitrosamines in various industrial settings is a significant public health concern.
    • Limited data exists on the prevalence and levels of N-nitrosamines in diverse manufacturing environments.

    Purpose of the Study:

    • To assess the presence and levels of specific N-nitrosamines (NDELA, NMOR, NDMA, NDPhA) in the air of manufacturing plants.
    • To investigate potential occupational exposure risks associated with N-nitrosamines in selected industries.
    • To contribute to a broader understanding of N-nitrosamine exposure in the industrial environment.

    Main Methods:

    • Conducted 40 air surveys across 28 manufacturing facilities.
    • Investigated industries including fish processing, dye manufacturing, leather tanneries, rubber production, and cutting fluid users.
    • Measured airborne concentrations of N-nitrosodiethanolamine (NDELA), N-nitrosomorpholine (NMOR), N-nitrosodimethylamine (NDMA), and N-nitrosodiphenylamine (NDPhA).

    Main Results:

    • N-nitrosamines (NDELA, NMOR, NDMA, NDPhA) were detected in the air of several surveyed factories.
    • High levels of N-nitrosodimethylamine (NDMA) up to 47 µg/m³ were found in a chrome tannery.
    • Significant levels of N-nitrosomorpholine (NMOR) up to 27 µg/m³ were identified in a rubber tire plant.

    Conclusions:

    • The study confirmed the presence of N-nitrosamines in various industrial workplaces, indicating potential occupational exposure risks.
    • Findings suggest that nitrosamine exposure levels in the rubber industry may be mirrored in other, unsurveyed industries.
    • Further research by NIOSH is ongoing to better understand and mitigate N-nitrosamine risks in the industrial environment.
