On the need for a new, distinct terminology for inorganic fibres

Abstract:
Existing definitions of 'asbestos' and 'mineral fibre' originate from industrial and mineralogical sources and may be confusing when applied to scientific or medical findings. For writing and applying regulations for handling asbestos and mineral fibres, there is a need for a distinct, descriptive and internationally accepted terminology based on properties such as morphology, size and solubility, which are more significant from a physiological point of view.
