    Summary

Thyroglossal duct remnants, including cysts and fistulas, are rare neck tumors. This study found no recurrences after surgery, regardless of whether the operation was radical or non-radical.

    Area of Science:

    • Otolaryngology
    • Surgical Pathology

    Context:

    • Thyroglossal duct cysts constitute approximately 2% of neck tumors.
    • Thyroglossal duct remnants present as either cysts or fistulas.
    • Surgical management of these remnants is crucial for preventing recurrence.

    Purpose:

    • To evaluate the surgical outcomes and recurrence rates of thyroglossal duct remnants.
    • To compare the efficacy of radical (Sistrunk) versus non-radical surgical approaches.
    • To analyze the relationship between preoperative findings and surgical strategy.

    Summary:

    • A retrospective review of 33 patients with thyroglossal duct remnants (22 cysts, 11 fistulas) treated between 1974-1979.
    • Follow-up data for 29 patients exceeded one year, with no observed recurrences.
    • Surgical approaches varied based on preoperative findings, with both radical and non-radical procedures showing no recurrence.

    Impact:

    • Challenges the established notion that only radical (Sistrunk) surgery prevents recurrence.
    • Suggests that tailored surgical approaches based on preoperative assessment may be effective.
    • Provides evidence for the successful management of thyroglossal duct remnants with varied surgical techniques.
