    Background:

    • Alveolar microlithiasis is a rare lung disease characterized by the accumulation of calcium phosphate microliths in the alveoli.
    • Therapeutic options for alveolar microlithiasis are limited, with bronchopulmonary lavage often discussed theoretically.

    Observation:

    • This study details the first known application of volume-controlled bronchopulmonary lavage in a patient diagnosed with alveolar microlithiasis.
    • The procedure was performed to assess its efficacy in removing alveolar microliths.

    Findings:

    • Despite theoretical considerations, volume-controlled bronchopulmonary lavage demonstrated no significant efficacy in clearing the alveolar microliths in this patient.
    • The alveolar spherules remained largely unaffected by the lavage procedure.

    Implications:

    • The findings suggest that volume-controlled bronchopulmonary lavage may not be an effective therapeutic strategy for alveolar microlithiasis.
    • Further research is needed to explore alternative or adjunctive treatments for managing alveolar microlithiasis and its associated respiratory burden.
