    Area of Science:

    • Nutritional Science
    • Pediatric Nutrition
    • Dietary Guidelines

    Background:

    • The National Academy of Sciences revises Recommended Dietary Allowances (RDA) approximately every five years.
    • RDAs are consensus opinions of nutritional scientists based on available data, subject to interpretation and challenges.
    • The protein RDA for 7- to 9-year-old children decreased by 40% from 60 g in 1958 to 36 g in 1974.

    Purpose of the Study:

    • To evaluate the current protein requirements for children.
    • To compare the protein intake percentage of total calories in children versus adults.
    • To analyze the energy contribution of protein in common food items.

    Main Methods:

    • Analysis of nitrogen balance data from laboratory studies.
    • Calculation of daily protein requirements based on accumulated data.
    • Comparison of current RDA for children with adult recommendations and food energy percentages.

    Main Results:

    • Positive nitrogen balance observed at protein intakes as low as 18 g daily (without accounting for all nitrogen losses).
    • Calculated daily protein requirement is 45 g from a typical American diet.
    • Adding a 30% safety factor suggests an allowance of 58.5 g.
    • Current RDA for children (7-10 years) provides 6% of total calories from protein, compared to 8.3% for adult males and 9.2% for adult females.

    Conclusions:

    • The current Recommended Dietary Allowances for protein in children may be underestimated.
    • Protein intake as a percentage of total calories differs significantly between children and adults.
    • Further research is needed to accurately determine optimal protein intake for children based on comprehensive data.
