    Background:

    • Establishing baseline pulmonary function data in young calves is essential for understanding respiratory health and disease.

    Purpose of the Study:

    • To characterize pulmonary function in young, healthy Holstein-Friesian calves.
    • To provide novel data on total pulmonary resistance, dynamic pulmonary compliance, and intrapulmonary gas mixing efficiency in calves.

    Main Methods:

    • Repeated pulmonary function tests were conducted on six resting, nonanesthetized Holstein-Friesian calves (4-6 weeks old).
    • Measurements included arterial blood gases (PaO2, PaCO2, pH), ventilatory parameters (minute ventilation, respiratory rate), and pulmonary mechanics (total pulmonary resistance, dynamic pulmonary compliance).
    • Intrapulmonary gas mixing efficiency was assessed using a nitrogen (N2) washout technique.

    Main Results:

    • Mean values for calves (59 kg) were: PaO2 73.3 mmHg, PaCO2 41.2 mmHg, pH 7.42, minute ventilation 13.1 L/min/m2, and respiratory rate 27.3 breaths/min.
    • Total pulmonary resistance was 3.1 cm H2O/L/sec, and dynamic pulmonary compliance was 0.15 L/cm H2O.
    • Nitrogen washout results for intrapulmonary gas mixing efficiency favorably agreed with previously reported canine values.

    Conclusions:

    • The study successfully established reference values for pulmonary function in young Holstein-Friesian calves.
    • The obtained values for pulmonary resistance and compliance align with predicted values from comparative studies in other species.
    • These findings provide a valuable baseline for future research in calf respiratory physiology and disease.
