    Background:

    • The jaw opening reflex (JOR) is a protective reflex.
    • Electroacupuncture (EA) is used to modulate pain and reflexes.
    • The trigeminal system mediates orofacial sensation and reflexes.

    Purpose of the Study:

    • To investigate the site of action of electroacupuncture on the jaw opening reflex.
    • To differentiate the neural pathways involved in tooth pulp-evoked versus lower lip-evoked JOR.
    • To determine if EA's effect on JOR is related to nociception.

    Main Methods:

    • Rats were subjected to electroacupuncture stimulation of the forefoot.
    • The jaw opening reflex was evoked by tooth pulp and lower lip stimulation.
    • The spinal trigeminal nucleus was transected at the obex.
    • Changes in reflex magnitude were recorded before and after transection and EA.

    • Distinct pathways may exist for different trigeminal afferent inputs to the JOR.
