Infraorbital fold in atopic dermatitis

Summary

The infraorbital fold, or Dennie-Morgan fold, frequently appears in atopic dermatitis patients with lower eyelid eczema. This fold is strongly associated with eczematous conditions affecting the lower eyelid.

Background:

The infraorbital fold, also known as the Dennie-Morgan fold, is a clinical sign sometimes observed in patients with atopic dermatitis.
The association between infraorbital folds and lower eyelid dermatitis requires further investigation across various dermatological conditions.

Purpose of the Study:

To investigate the prevalence of infraorbital folds in patients diagnosed with atopic dermatitis.
To determine the correlation between the presence of infraorbital folds and lower eyelid dermatitis in patients with atopic dermatitis and other eczematous conditions.

Main Methods:

A cohort of 300 patients with atopic dermatitis was examined for the presence of infraorbital folds and lower eyelid dermatitis.
Comparative analysis was conducted on patients with and without lower eyelid dermatitis to assess the incidence of infraorbital folds.
A small group of patients with contact dermatitis of the lower eyelid was also evaluated for infraorbital folds.

Main Results:

An infraorbital fold (Dennie-Morgan fold) was identified in 25% of 300 atopic dermatitis patients.
Lower eyelid dermatitis was present in 23% of patients; 83% of these also exhibited an infraorbital fold.
Infraorbital folds were significantly less common (7%) in atopic dermatitis patients without lower eyelid dermatitis and were also observed in patients with contact dermatitis of the lower eyelid.

Conclusions:

The infraorbital fold is likely a consequence of eczematous dermatoses affecting the lower eyelid, regardless of the specific etiology.
The high prevalence of infraorbital folds in atopic dermatitis patients may be attributed to the eyelid being a common site for this condition.
Infraorbital folds serve as a potential indicator of eczematous involvement of the lower eyelid.
