    Background:

    • Uterine prolapse is a serious condition in beef cows, often associated with metabolic disturbances.
    • Understanding the biochemical profiles of affected animals is crucial for improving management and treatment strategies.

    Purpose of the Study:

    • To investigate the serum mineral concentrations, specifically calcium and phosphorus, in beef cows experiencing uterine prolapse.
    • To determine the association between uterine prolapse, hypocalcemia, and dystocia in beef cattle.

    Main Methods:

    • Serum samples were collected from 26 beef cows with uterine prolapse and 15 control cows with minor dystocia.
    • Serum calcium, phosphorus, and calcium-to-phosphorus ratios were analyzed and compared between groups.
    • Incidence of hypocalcemia and hypophosphatemia was assessed in both groups.

    Main Results:

    • Cows with uterine prolapse exhibited significantly lower serum calcium (8.22 mg/dL vs. 8.91 mg/dL) and lower calcium-to-phosphorus ratios (1.99 vs. 2.99) compared to controls.

    • Higher serum phosphorus concentrations (4.78 mg/dL vs. 3.54 mg/dL) were noted in the uterine prolapse group, though hypophosphatemia was also common (42.3% vs. 66.7%).

    Conclusions:

    • Mild hypocalcemia and some degree of dystocia are associated with uterine prolapse in beef cows.
    • The high incidence of hypophosphatemia may indicate a phosphorus-deficient diet contributing to the condition.
    • Further research into dietary factors and metabolic profiles is warranted for affected cattle.
