An evaluation of etomidate in total intravenous anesthesia (TIVA)

In 47 adult patients undergoing either microlaryngoscopy or bronchoscopy, anesthesia was maintained with a continuous etomidate infusion after induction with etomidate and spraying the vocal cords and trachea with 10% xylocaine. The patients breathed air spontaneously throughout the procedure, oxygen being added if necessary. It is claimed that this technique provides good, safe and convenient anesthesia. An additional advantage in cases of microlaryngoscopy is that mobility of the vocal cord is retained.
