    Purpose of the Study:

    • To evaluate expanded polytetrafluoroethylene (PTFE) as an adjunctive material in retinal detachment surgery.
    • To assess the biocompatibility and tissue integration of PTFE implants.
    • To explore potential applications of PTFE in ophthalmic procedures.

    Main Methods:

    • Expanded PTFE material was prepared into a 4 mm sponge wrapped in a PTFE tube and sutured episclerally.
    • PTFE was also rolled and sutured into an episcleral pocket as an implant.
    • Microscopic sectioning was performed to evaluate tissue response and integration.

    Main Results:

    • Microscopic analysis revealed a minimal inflammatory response to the PTFE material.
    • Significant ingrowth of connective tissue into the PTFE was observed.
    • Intrascleral PTFE implants were successfully infiltrated with connective tissue, forming fibrovascular tissue.

    • Potential applications include intrascleral buckling elements and coverings for staphylomatous areas requiring episcleral support.
