Background:

Asthma is a chronic respiratory condition affecting millions worldwide.
Exposure to environmental pollutants, including secondhand smoke, can exacerbate asthma symptoms.
Understanding the impact of passive smoking on lung function is crucial for public health.

Purpose of the Study:

To investigate the effects of sidestream cigarette smoke exposure on pulmonary function in patients with bronchial asthma.
To compare the response of asthmatic subjects to passive smoking with that of healthy control subjects.
To assess the reversibility of smoke-induced pulmonary changes in asthmatic individuals.

Main Methods:

Ten patients with bronchial asthma and ten healthy controls were exposed to sidestream cigarette smoke for one hour in an environmental chamber.
Carboxyhemoglobin levels and pulmonary function parameters (FEV1, FEF25-75%, FVC) were measured before, during, and after exposure.
Asthmatic subjects received metaproterenol inhalations post-exposure to assess reversibility.

Main Results:

All subjects showed a similar increase in carboxyhemoglobin (0.40 percent) after smoke exposure.
Asthmatic patients exhibited a significant linear decrease in pulmonary function: FEV1 (21.4%), FEF25-75% (19.2%), and FVC (20.0%).
Control subjects showed no significant changes in pulmonary function. Asthma-related impairments were reversible with metaproterenol.

Conclusions:

Nonsmokers with bronchial asthma are at increased risk when exposed to sidestream cigarette smoke.
Passive smoking significantly impairs lung function in asthmatic individuals.
Metaproterenol effectively reversed smoke-induced pulmonary function deficits in asthmatics.
