    Background:

    Purpose of the Study:

    • To investigate the association between cigarette smoking history and the risk of metastatic disease in patients with malignant melanoma.
    • To determine if smoking status impacts disease-free survival rates in melanoma patients.

    Main Methods:

    • Prospective study design.
    • Inclusion of 178 patients diagnosed with malignant melanoma.
    • Identification of a high-risk subgroup based on smoking history (current smokers, >15 pack-years).
    • Comparison of two-year disease-free survival rates between high-risk and other patients.

    • Chronic smoking may impair host defense mechanisms, adversely affecting the biological behavior of malignant melanoma.
    • Smoking cessation interventions may be crucial for improving outcomes in melanoma patients.
