[Oxygen therapy with an oxygen concentrator]

G P Bosi, A Dotti, G F Tassi

    Minerva Medica
    |December 8, 1981

    Summary

Oxygen concentrators are effective for chronic respiratory insufficiency patients using low FiO2 Venturi masks. Higher concentrations were unusable due to flow rate limitations and insufficient Venturi effect.

    Area of Science:

    • Pulmonary Medicine
    • Respiratory Therapy
    • Biomedical Engineering

    Context:

    • Chronic bronchopneumopathy patients often experience respiratory insufficiency and pulmonary hypertension.
    • Oxygen therapy is crucial for managing these conditions.
    • Evaluating novel oxygen delivery systems is essential for improving patient outcomes.

    Purpose:

    • To assess the efficacy of an oxygen concentrator (De VO2 955) for patients with chronic bronchopneumopathy.
    • To evaluate different gas supply modalities, specifically Venturi masks, with the oxygen concentrator.
    • To determine optimal oxygen concentrations and flow rates for effective respiratory support.

    Summary:

    • The study evaluated an oxygen concentrator (De VO2 955) in patients with chronic respiratory insufficiency and pulmonary hypertension.
    • Venturi masks delivering 24% and 28% FiO2 were suitable for patients with normal or low ventilation.
    • Higher FiO2 concentrations were not achieved due to decreased oxygen concentration at high flow rates and an insufficient Venturi effect.

    Impact:

    • Findings guide the selection of appropriate oxygen delivery devices and concentrations for patients with chronic respiratory conditions.
    • Highlights the limitations of certain oxygen delivery systems under specific physiological conditions.
    • Informs the development of more efficient oxygen concentrator systems for respiratory support.
