Induced abortion: a risk factor for placenta previa

J M Barrett, F H Boehm, A P Killam

American Journal of Obstetrics and Gynecology
    |December 1, 1981

    Summary

The incidence of placenta previa significantly increased due to maternal transports and induced first trimester abortions. Induced abortions are a key factor predisposing women to placenta previa.

    Area of Science:

    • Obstetrics and Gynecology
    • Maternal-Fetal Medicine

    Background:

    • Placenta previa incidence has shown an increase.
    • Vanderbilt University Hospital observed a threefold rise in placenta previa rates between 1972-1974 and 1980.

    Purpose of the Study:

    • To investigate the factors contributing to the increased incidence of placenta previa.
    • To identify specific patient populations associated with the rise in placenta previa.

    Main Methods:

    • Retrospective analysis of patient data at Vanderbilt University Hospital.
    • Comparison of placenta previa incidence in different patient groups between 1972-1974 and 1980.

    Main Results:

    • Placenta previa incidence rose from 0.3% (1 in 318) to 0.9% (1 in 109).

    Related Experiment Videos

  • Maternal transports (3.3%) and induced first trimester abortions (3.8%) were significantly associated with higher placenta previa rates.
  • After accounting for transports, induced abortions remained a significant risk factor (2.1%).
  • Conclusions:

    • Induced first trimester abortion is a significant predisposing factor for placenta previa.
    • Changes in patient demographics, specifically the rise in induced abortions, explain the increased incidence.
