Fortuitously discovered intracranial aneurysms

D J Zacks, D B Russell, J D Miller

    Archives of Neurology
    |January 1, 1980
    PubMed
    Summary

Unsuspected intracranial aneurysms found incidentally in ten patients showed a benign clinical course over a 2 to 7.5-year follow-up. This suggests conservative management may be appropriate for some asymptomatic, incidentally discovered brain aneurysms.

    Area of Science:

    • Neurosurgery
    • Neuroradiology
    • Vascular Neurology

    Background:

    • Intracranial aneurysms are abnormalities of brain blood vessels.
    • Incidental discovery of aneurysms occurs during imaging for other conditions.
    • The natural history of incidentally found aneurysms is not well-established.

    Purpose of the Study:

    • To evaluate the clinical course of incidentally discovered intracranial aneurysms.
    • To determine the growth or rupture rate of these lesions.
    • To inform management strategies for asymptomatic aneurysms.

    Main Methods:

    • Retrospective review of ten patients with twelve incidentally discovered intracranial aneurysms.
    • Radiographic assessment and clinical follow-up over a 2 to 7.5-year period.
    • Analysis of aneurysm size, location, and any associated symptoms or complications.

    Main Results:

    • All twelve aneurysms remained stable in size and morphology during the observation period.
    • No aneurysms ruptured or caused symptoms during follow-up.
    • Patients remained asymptomatic from their aneurysms.

    Conclusions:

    • Incidentally discovered intracranial aneurysms can exhibit a benign clinical course.
    • Conservative management may be a viable option for select asymptomatic aneurysms.
    • Further research is warranted to define optimal management guidelines.
