    Summary

    Intravenous cholecystokinin (CCK) increases intestinal permeability in normal individuals via gallbladder emptying. This effect, linked to bile acids, was not observed in post-cholecystectomy patients.

    • Intestinal permeability is crucial for nutrient absorption and barrier function.
    • Cholecystokinin (CCK) plays a role in gallbladder contraction and digestion.

    Purpose of the Study:

    • To investigate the effect of intravenous cholecystokinin (CCK) on intestinal permeability.
    • To determine if CCK's effect is mediated by gallbladder emptying.

    Main Methods:

    • Oral lactulose excretion in urine was measured to assess intestinal permeability.
    • Normal subjects and post-cholecystectomy patients received CCK in hyperosmolar and isosmolar solutions.

    Main Results:

    • CCK significantly increased lactulose excretion in normal subjects with hyperosmolar solutions.
    • CCK did not affect lactulose excretion in normal subjects with isosmolar solutions.
