Near-drowning: an unusual case

J E Montes, A W Conn

    Canadian Anaesthetists' Society Journal
    |March 1, 1980

    Summary

Near-drowning victims can have a positive prognosis even after apparent brain death. Prompt cerebral resuscitation measures can lead to full recovery, challenging previous assumptions about near-drowning outcomes.

    Area of Science:

    • Pediatric critical care medicine
    • Neurology
    • Emergency medicine

    Background:

    • Near-drowning incidents pose significant risks to children.
    • Assessing neurological prognosis after drowning is challenging.

    Observation:

    • A 2 1/2-year-old male experienced a near-drowning event in a swimming pool.
    • Initial resuscitation restored circulation and respiration.
    • The child later showed signs of apparent brain death in the intensive care unit.

    Findings:

    • Aggressive and continuous cerebral resuscitation measures were implemented.
    • These interventions successfully supported the child's neurological recovery.
    • The child made a complete recovery, with no apparent long-term deficits.

    Implications:

    • This case suggests a potentially better prognosis for near-drowning victims than previously assumed.
    • It highlights the importance of prompt and sustained cerebral resuscitation.
    • Further research is warranted to reevaluate the prognostic criteria for near-drowning injuries.
