    Summary

Pigmented papular lesions in condylomata acuminata cases may represent an early stage or variant. These benign findings share clinical similarities with multicentric pigmented Bowen's disease, warranting further investigation into their relationship.

    Area of Science:

    • Dermatology
    • Pathology

    Background:

    • Condylomata acuminata (CA) can present with unusual pigmented papular lesions.
    • The differential diagnosis for pigmented papular lesions includes various neoplastic and infectious conditions.

    Purpose of the Study:

    • To characterize the histopathological features of pigmented papular lesions associated with condylomata acuminata.
    • To explore the relationship between these lesions and multicentric pigmented Bowen's disease.

    Main Methods:

    • Light microscopy and electron microscopy were used to examine 5 cases of CA with pigmented papular lesions.

    Main Results:

    • Microscopy revealed benign basaloid cell proliferation and papillomatosis with minimal keratinocyte vacuolization.
    • Increased mitotic figures were noted, but cellular atypia and disorderly arrangement were rare.
    • Electron microscopy confirmed benign epidermal cell proliferation.

    Conclusions:

    • Pigmented papules in CA may represent an initial stage or forme fruste of the condition.
    • Clinical and histological similarities to multicentric pigmented Bowen's disease suggest a potential relationship requiring further study.
