    Summary

Urinary tract instrumentation can cause miliary tuberculosis spread in undiagnosed renal tuberculosis patients. Mycobacteremia with metastatic foci is a potential complication of procedures like ureteral catheterization.

    Area of Science:

    • Nephrology
    • Infectious Diseases
    • Pulmonology

    Background:

    • Renal tuberculosis (TB) is a serious infection affecting the kidneys.
    • Urinary tract instrumentation is a common urological procedure.
    • Undiagnosed infections pose a risk during invasive procedures.

    Observation:

    • A patient with undiagnosed right renal tuberculosis developed miliary spread to both lungs.
    • This complication occurred after ureteral catheterization.

    Findings:

    • Mycobacteremia (Mycobacterium in the bloodstream) was identified.
    • Miliary metastatic foci (widespread small lesions) were present in the lungs.
    • This suggests a link between instrumentation and TB dissemination.

    Implications:

    • Healthcare providers should consider mycobacteremia and miliary spread as potential complications.
    • Screening for renal tuberculosis may be warranted before urinary tract instrumentation in endemic areas.
    • This highlights the importance of early diagnosis and management of renal TB.
