    Background:

    • Fluid overload is a common complication in dialysis patients, often managed through ultrafiltration.
    • Achieving efficient fluid removal without causing hemodynamic instability or symptoms remains a challenge.

    Purpose of the Study:

    • To compare the efficacy and safety of hydrostatic ultrafiltration using a constant low-sodium dialysate versus a decreasing sodium dialysate in hemodialysis patients.

    Main Methods:

    • A double-blind, randomized crossover study involving twelve patients undergoing hemodialysis.
    • Two treatment arms: hemodialysis with a fixed 130 mEq/L sodium dialysate and hemodialysis with a decreasing sodium dialysate (150 to 133 mEq/L).
    • Hydrostatic ultrafiltration was performed at a constant rate (900 ml/hr) until a 15% drop in mean arterial pressure or symptoms occurred.
