Ossicular manipulation in chronic ear surgery. An electrocochleographic study

Summary

Ossicular chain manipulations during ear surgery did not cause inner ear damage. Electrocochleography showed no threshold shifts, suggesting this procedure is safer than other surgical risks like perilymph fistulae.

Background:

Inner ear damage is a risk during otologic surgery.
Potential causes include perilymph fistulae and acoustic trauma.

Purpose of the Study:

To evaluate the impact of ossicular chain manipulation on inner ear function.
To compare the safety of ossicular chain surgery to other cochlear risks.

Main Methods:

Twelve patients underwent ossicular dissections during ear surgery.
Electrocochleography (ECoG) was used to assess inner ear function.
Pre- and post-manipulation ECoG thresholds were compared.

Main Results:

No significant threshold shifts were observed after ossicular chain manipulation.
