Urinary retention can be caused by lumbar disc protrusions, most often at the L4/5 level. Consider this diagnosis in patients with unexplained urinary retention.

Background:

Urinary retention is a common clinical problem.
Intervertebral disc protrusion is a known cause of neurological symptoms.

Observation:

This study reviewed 17 patients with urinary retention.
Urinary retention was associated with central lumbar disc protrusion at the L4/5 level in these patients.

Findings:

A strong association was found between lumbar disc protrusion and urinary retention.
The L4/5 level was the most common site for disc protrusion causing urinary retention.

Implications:

Clinicians should consider intervertebral disc protrusion in the differential diagnosis of unexplained urinary retention.
Early diagnosis and treatment of lumbar disc protrusion may prevent long-term urinary dysfunction.
