    Summary

    Facial hemiatrophy can lead to spontaneous masseter muscle spasms years later. Electromyography revealed nerve injury activity in the trigeminal nerve, similar to hemifacial spasm.

    Background:

    • Facial hemiatrophy is a rare condition characterized by wasting of facial tissues.

    Observation:

    • A young woman developed spontaneous left masseter muscle spasms six years after facial hemiatrophy onset.
    • A dental procedure preceded the facial wasting by four weeks.

    Findings:

    • Electromyographic findings showed brief bursts of potentials up to 200 Hz, characteristic of hemifacial spasm.
    • These findings indicate spontaneous nerve activity in trigeminal nerve-innervated muscles following injury.

    Implications:

    • This case suggests a potential link between trigeminal nerve injury and secondary spasm development.
    • Understanding this mechanism could inform diagnosis and treatment of facial spasms and hemiatrophy.
