    Summary

    Periosteal growth, not muscular traction, directly causes the migration of tendinous and ligamentous insertions. Arresting bone growth halted insertion migration, while altered muscle pull did not prevent it.

    Background:

    • Tendinous and ligamentous insertions migrate during skeletal development.
    • The roles of periosteal growth and muscular traction in this migration are debated.

    Purpose of the Study:

    • To investigate the primary driver of tendinous and ligamentous insertion migration.
    • To differentiate the contributions of periosteal growth versus muscular traction.

    Main Methods:

    • Epiphyseal plate growth in young rabbits was arrested using staples.
    • The insertion of the tibialis anterior muscle was surgically altered to change the direction of muscular traction.

    Main Results:

    • Arresting epiphyseal plate growth led to cessation of periosteal growth and subsequent migration of insertions.
    • Altering muscular traction direction did not prevent normal ligamentous insertion migration.

    Conclusions:

    • Periosteal growth is the direct cause of tendinous and ligamentous insertion migration.
    • Muscular traction is not the primary factor driving insertion site movement during skeletal development.
