Summary

Outcome-focused care plans (OCPs) improve client outcomes and reduce resource use in home healthcare. This study found that OCPs decreased nurse visit time compared to process-focused care plans (PCPs), enhancing quality and efficiency.

Area of Science:

  • Home Healthcare Management
  • Nursing Resource Utilization
  • Quality Improvement in Healthcare

Background:

  • Home healthcare administrators face the challenge of balancing client outcomes with resource utilization.
  • Previous research indicates outcome-focused care plans (OCPs) outperform traditional process-focused care plans (PCPs) in quality indicator scores.
  • The efficiency and resource implications of OCPs compared to PCPs require further investigation.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To quantify and compare the resource utilization, specifically nurse visit time, between OCPs and PCPs in a home healthcare setting.
  • To evaluate the impact of care plan type on the efficiency of nursing care delivery.
  • To provide data for home healthcare administrators on optimizing care plan strategies.

Main Methods:

Related Experiment Videos

  • A comparative analysis of resource utilization was conducted within a home healthcare agency.
  • Nursing care delivery was managed using either process-focused care plans (PCPs) or outcome-focused care plans (OCPs).
  • Nurse visit times were meticulously recorded and compared between the two care plan methodologies.

Main Results:

  • Nursing care guided by outcome-focused care plans (OCPs) resulted in significantly less nurse visit time compared to process-focused care plans (PCPs).
  • The study demonstrated a reduction in resource utilization when OCPs were implemented.
  • OCPs proved to be a more resource-efficient approach to care delivery.

Conclusions:

  • Outcome-focused care plans (OCPs) provide a viable strategy for home healthcare agencies to enhance client quality while simultaneously reducing resource utilization.
  • Implementing OCPs can lead to greater operational efficiency by optimizing nurse visit times.
  • These findings support the adoption of OCPs as a means to improve both the quality of care and the economic sustainability of home healthcare services.
