Serial MRI scans reveal that herniated lumbar discs often decrease in size over one year with conservative treatment. Larger initial herniations and disc degeneration correlate with greater size reduction in herniated disc fragments.

Background:

  • Herniated lumbar discs are a common cause of low back pain.
  • Conservative treatment is frequently employed, but the natural history of disc herniation size is not fully understood.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To investigate the natural history of herniated lumbar disc size over one year using serial MRI.
  • To identify factors influencing the change in herniated disc size during conservative management.

Main Methods:

  • Serial MRI scans were performed on 32 patients with herniated lumbar discs at acute, 6-month, and 1-year follow-up points.
  • Measurements included the cross-sectional area of the herniated disc within the spinal canal and disc height.
  • Patient data were analyzed to correlate initial herniation size and disc degeneration with subsequent size changes.
