Area of Science:

  • Hepatobiliary Surgery
  • Surgical Oncology
  • Gastroenterology

Background:

  • Recurrent or residual malignant liver tumors pose significant treatment challenges.
  • Repeat hepatic resections are complex procedures with potential benefits.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To evaluate the feasibility and outcomes of repeat hepatic resections for liver malignancies.
  • To assess the safety and efficacy of repeat hepatectomy in patients with recurrent or residual disease.

Main Methods:

  • Retrospective analysis of 15 repeat hepatic resections performed on 12 patients.
  • Inclusion of patients with primary liver tumors and liver metastases.
  • Follow-up duration ranged from 4 to 36 months.

Main Results:

Related Experiment Videos

  • No operative mortality was observed in the study cohort.
  • The mean survival after repeat resection was 16.8 months (range 4-36 months).
  • Two patients died from recurrent disease during the follow-up period.

Conclusions:

  • Repeat hepatectomy is a technically demanding but feasible surgical option.
  • Repeat liver resections can provide benefits similar to initial surgeries for malignant liver tumors.
  • Careful patient selection and surgical expertise are crucial for successful outcomes.
