    Summary

Electron microscopy revealed neutrophils migrating through edematous skin in psoriasis pustulosa. These findings suggest immune responses contribute to epidermal changes and pustule formation in this condition.

    Area of Science:

    • Dermatology
    • Pathology
    • Electron Microscopy

    Background:

    • Psoriasis pustulosa is a severe form of psoriasis.
    • Understanding its cellular mechanisms is crucial for effective treatment.

    Purpose of the Study:

    • To investigate the ultrastructural changes in the dermis and epidermis of patients with psoriasis pustulosa using electron microscopy.

    Main Methods:

    • Electron microscopy was used to examine skin biopsies from five cases of psoriasis pustulosa.

    Main Results:

    • Dilated dermal capillaries filled with neutrophils and red blood cells were observed.
    • Neutrophils migrated from vessels into the edematous dermis and epidermis.
    • Histiocytes with Langerhans granules were present in both dermis and epidermis.
    • Epidermal changes were most pronounced near pustules, with keratinocyte alterations possibly secondary to edema and neutrophil infiltration.

    Conclusions:

    • Electron microscopy confirmed known morphological findings in psoriasis pustulosa.
    • Epidermal changes appear secondary to edema and neutrophil accumulation.
    • Immunological phenomena are likely involved in the pathogenesis of neutrophil migration and pustule formation.
