Radon levels in a Toronto school

Area of Science:

  • Environmental Health
  • Occupational Health
  • Radiation Safety

Background:

  • A 1991 screening program by the Canadian Institute for Radiation Safety (CAIRS) identified elevated radon progeny levels at Birch Cliff Public School.
  • Specifically, basement locations exceeded the action level of 4.16 x 10(-7) Jm-3 (20 mWL).

Purpose of the Study:

  • To address and mitigate high radon progeny concentrations found in the basement of Birch Cliff Public School.
  • To re-evaluate radon levels after implementing remediation strategies.

Main Methods:

  • Follow-up radon testing was conducted on ground floor and basement locations.
  • Cracks and openings in the basement were sealed.
  • A new heating/ventilating (HV) system was designed and installed for the basement.

Related Experiment Videos

  • Post-remediation radon testing was performed.
  • Main Results:

    • Ground floor radon progeny levels were below the action level.
    • Six basement locations initially showed radon progeny levels above the action level.
    • After sealing and installing a new HV system, average basement radon progeny levels decreased significantly to 7.43 x 10(-8) Jm-3 (3.57 mWL).

    Conclusions:

    • Sealing basement openings and installing a new HV system effectively reduced radon progeny levels below the action level.
    • The remediation strategy proved successful in mitigating the radon contamination in the school basement.
