    Purpose of the Study:

    • To investigate changes in blood substrates.
    • To determine the glycogen depletion pattern in vastus lateralis muscle fibers during ice hockey games.

    Main Methods:

    • Eight male varsity ice hockey players were monitored over four games.
    • Venous blood samples were collected pre- and post-period.
    • Vastus lateralis muscle biopsies were obtained pre- and post-game.

    Main Results:

    • Blood glucose, lactate, and plasma free fatty acids (FFA) significantly increased post-period (p < 0.05).
    • Muscle glycogen decreased by an average of 60% throughout the games.
    • Histochemical analysis revealed utilization of Type I, IIA, and IIB muscle fibers, with Type I fibers showing the greatest depletion.
    • Despite positional differences (forwards vs. defensemen), blood substrate profiles and glycogen depletion patterns were similar.

    Conclusions:

    • Ice hockey gameplay leads to significant alterations in blood substrates and substantial muscle glycogen depletion.
    • All major skeletal muscle fiber types are utilized, with a preferential reliance on Type I fibers during gameplay.
    • Positional differences in playing time do not significantly alter these metabolic responses.
