Background:

  • Chronic liver fluke infections (Opisthorchis viverrini, Clonorchis sinensis) impact over 30 million in Southeast Asia.
  • These infections cause significant morbidity, predisposition to cholangiocarcinoma, and frequent reinfection.
  • Heterogeneity in worm burden exists, with some exposed individuals remaining uninfected.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To investigate the immunological basis for resistance in individuals not shedding Opisthorchis viverrini eggs.
  • To compare antibody levels between infected and uninfected residents in an endemic area.

Main Methods:

  • Serum antibody levels (IgG, IgA, IgM) to O. viverrini were measured using enzyme-linked immunosorbent assays (ELISA).
  • Adult worm homogenate (AWH) and metacercaria homogenate (MH) were used as antigens.
