Summary

Prostatitis affects 90.3% of benign prostatic hyperplasia (BPH) patients undergoing transvesical prostatectomy. Gram-negative prostatitis correlates with more complications and longer hospital stays, but antibiotics can improve outcomes.

Area of Science:

  • Urology
  • Microbiology

Background:

  • Benign prostatic hyperplasia (BPH) is common in aging men.
  • Prostatitis, inflammation of the prostate, can coexist with BPH.
  • The impact of prostatitis on BPH surgery outcomes requires further investigation.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To determine the incidence of prostatitis in BPH patients.
  • To analyze the microbiological profile of prostatitis in BPH.
  • To assess the effect of prostatitis on the postoperative course after transvesical prostatectomy.

Main Methods:

  • Bacteriological analysis of urine and expressed prostatic secretion pre-operation.
  • Urine analysis at three postoperative intervals.
  • Pathohistological and microbiological examination of BPH tissue specimens.

Related Experiment Videos

Main Results:

  • Prostatitis incidence was 90.3% in BPH patients.
  • Microorganisms isolated from BPH tissue: Gram-positive (32.8%), Gram-negative (30.8%), fungi (2.9%).
  • Gram-negative prostatitis was associated with increased postoperative complications and prolonged hospitalization.

Conclusions:

  • Prostatitis is highly prevalent in BPH patients undergoing prostatectomy.
  • Gram-negative prostatitis significantly impacts postoperative outcomes.
  • Antibiotic therapy, both pre- and post-operatively, can mitigate complications in patients with Gram-negative prostatitis.
