Background:

  • Vascular endothelial cells (VECs) alter function and morphology when exposed to stimuli like cytokines, promoting inflammation.
  • Endothelial cell activation is a key process in inflammatory reactions.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To investigate endothelial cell activation in vivo within skin biopsies of patients with systemic vasculitis.
  • To correlate the expression of adhesion molecules with inflammatory cytokines and cellular infiltrates.

Main Methods:

  • Analysis of 20 skin biopsies from 18 patients with systemic vasculitis.
  • Assessment of endothelial cell morphology and expression of intercellular adhesion molecule-1 (ICAM-1), vascular cell adhesion molecule-1 (VCAM-1), and endothelial leucocyte adhesion molecule-1 (ELAM-1).
