Summary

Retropubic adenomectomy is a safe and effective surgical option for benign prostatic hyperplasia (BPH) when indicated by prostate size. This open surgery method shows low mortality and acceptable complication rates for BPH treatment.

Background:

  • Benign prostatic hyperplasia (BPH) is a common condition in aging men.
  • Surgical intervention is often necessary for symptomatic BPH.
  • Transurethral and open surgical techniques are primary treatment modalities.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To evaluate the efficacy and safety of retropubic adenomectomy for BPH.
  • To determine the role of prostate size in surgical approach selection.

Main Methods:

  • A retrospective analysis of 1917 patients undergoing surgery for BPH between 1983 and 1993.
  • Classification of surgical approach based on prostate weight determined by ultrasound: transurethral adenomectomy for <50g, retropubic adenomectomy for >50g.
  • Data collection on operative outcomes, including mortality and complication rates.
