Summary

Ejaculation does not significantly alter prostate-specific antigen (PSA) levels in healthy men. This study found no statistical difference in serum PSA concentrations before and after ejaculation, suggesting it has minimal impact.

Area of Science:

  • Urology
  • Andrology
  • Clinical Chemistry

Background:

  • Prostate-specific antigen (PSA) levels can be influenced by various medical procedures.
  • Previous research suggests a potential link between ejaculation status and serum PSA concentrations, but findings are unclear.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To investigate the direct effect of ejaculation on serum PSA levels in healthy adult males.
  • To clarify the relationship between ejaculation and PSA concentration for clinical interpretation.

Main Methods:

  • Blood samples were collected from 19 healthy male subjects.
  • Samples were taken prior to ejaculation and on five consecutive days following ejaculation.
  • One participant was excluded due to nocturnal ejaculation, with a prohibition on further ejaculations during the study period.

Main Results:

  • Mean serum PSA levels before ejaculation were recorded.
  • Mean serum PSA levels were measured daily for five consecutive days post-ejaculation.
  • Statistical analysis revealed no significant differences in PSA levels across the sampling period.

Conclusions:

  • Ejaculation does not appear to have a significant impact on serum prostate-specific antigen (PSA) concentrations in healthy men.
  • These findings suggest that recent ejaculation history may not require consideration when interpreting PSA test results in this population.
