Summary

The enhanced GG program on the Humphrey Field Analyzer improves sensitivity for early glaucoma detection and better characterizes scotoma size and shape. It offers superior detection of hemifield asymmetries in later stages of glaucoma.

Area of Science:

  • Ophthalmology
  • Visual field testing
  • Glaucoma diagnostics

Context:

  • The Humphrey Field Analyzer (HFA) is a standard tool for visual field testing.
  • The 30-2 program is a common visual field test pattern.
  • Glaucoma and ocular hypertension require sensitive detection methods.

Purpose:

  • To evaluate the diagnostic utility of the GG program, an enhanced visual field test pattern on the HFA.
  • To compare the GG program's sensitivity and specificity against the standard 30-2 program.
  • To assess the GG program's effectiveness in detecting and characterizing glaucomatous visual field defects.

Summary:

  • The GG program, with its denser grid and additional test points, demonstrated higher sensitivity in detecting ocular hypertension and early-stage glaucoma (Stage I) compared to the 30-2 program.

Related Experiment Videos

  • The GG program's condensed grid significantly improved the assessment of scotoma form and size, particularly for nasal scotomas beyond 30 degrees eccentricity in glaucoma stages II-IV.
  • While the Glaucoma Hemifield Index (GHI) showed no significant difference between programs in early glaucoma, the GG program's GHI was significantly better at detecting hemifield asymmetries in Stage II glaucoma with localized scotomas.
  • Impact:

    • The GG program enhances the early detection of glaucoma and ocular hypertension by increasing sensitivity.
    • It provides a more detailed characterization of visual field defects, aiding in diagnosis and management.
    • The GG program's improved ability to detect asymmetries is crucial for monitoring disease progression and guiding treatment decisions in glaucoma patients.
