Area of Science:

  • Neurology
  • Psychiatry

Context:

  • Multiple sclerosis (MS) is a chronic neurological disease.
  • Psychotic disorders can occur in patients with MS.
  • Previous literature reviews and patient record analyses are limited.

Purpose:

  • To investigate the occurrence and characteristics of paranoid and hallucinatory psychoses in multiple sclerosis patients.
  • To explore the potential of MS as a trigger for cycloid psychoses.
  • To contribute to a new classification of psychoses associated with MS.

Summary:

  • This study reviewed 20th-century literature and 688 patient records to identify psychoses in multiple sclerosis (MS) patients.
  • Psychoses, especially cycloid psychoses, were found to be more frequent in MS patients compared to the general population.

Related Experiment Videos

  • Cycloid psychoses in MS patients occurred earlier, with a higher frequency of hallucinations, and affected men and women equally.
  • Impact:

    • MS can act as a trigger for cycloid psychoses, similar to HIV infection.
    • Impaired critical faculties due to MS contribute to psychosis development.
    • Findings suggest MS patients perceive the disease as similarly threatening, regardless of gender.
