Background:

  • Extramedullary haemopoiesis (EMH) is the formation of blood cells outside the bone marrow.
  • The endometrium is an unusual site for EMH.

Observation:

  • Four cases of endometrial EMH were identified in patients with co-existing hematologic diseases.
  • Histological examination of endometrial tissue revealed EMH.
  • No EMH was found in control endometrium samples from women with myelofibrosis or fetal uteri.

Findings:

  • Endometrial EMH was associated with myeloproliferative disorders, thalassaemia trait, chronic myeloid leukemia, and multiple myeloma.
  • The presence of EMH in the endometrium aided in diagnosing hematologic abnormalities in two cases.
  • Fetal endometrium lacks haemopoietic elements, suggesting EMH is not a normal developmental finding in this site.
