Third toe transfers to the hand were performed in 15 patients with multiple amputations. This procedure offered a viable reconstructive option when other toes were unsuitable or unavailable.

Area of Science:

  • Microsurgery
  • Reconstructive surgery
  • Orthopedics

Background:

  • Toe-to-hand transplantation is a reconstructive option for patients with hand amputations.
  • Third toe transfer is a less common alternative to second toe transfer.

Observation:

  • Eighteen third toe-to-hand transfers were performed in 15 patients between 1984 and 1993.
  • Patients had undergone multiple amputations, with follow-up ranging from 5 to 78 months.

Findings:

  • Third toe transfer was chosen when the second toe was unavailable, unsuitable, or preserved for gait after a great toe-to-thumb transfer.
  • Size match was also a consideration for selecting the third toe.

Implications:

  • Third toe transfer provides a valuable alternative in toe-to-hand reconstruction for select patients.
