Summary

Many patients with treatment-resistant depression benefit from combining antidepressants. This study shows successful outcomes using nortriptyline and bupropion in refractory depression cases.

Background:

  • Many patients with depression do not respond to initial antidepressant monotherapy.
  • Treatment-resistant depression (TRD) often necessitates alternative strategies, including polypharmacy.

Observation:

  • Four cases of patients with refractory depression were analyzed.
  • These patients had previously failed multiple single antidepressant trials.

Findings:

  • Successful treatment was achieved by combining nortriptyline (a tricyclic antidepressant) with bupropion (a newer antidepressant agent).
  • This combination therapy demonstrated efficacy in managing severe, treatment-resistant depression.

Implications:

  • Combining nortriptyline and bupropion may be a viable strategy for managing refractory depression.
