Generalized lichen nitidus appearing subsequent to lichen planus

Background:

Lichen planus is a common inflammatory condition affecting skin and mucous membranes.
Generalized lichen nitidus is an extremely rare variant of lichen nitidus, characterized by widespread small papules.

Observation:

A 27-year-old male presented with generalized lichen nitidus (multiple small, shiny papules on the trunk and upper extremities) and lichen planus (hyperpigmented violaceous plaques on the feet).

Findings:

The simultaneous occurrence of generalized lichen nitidus and lichen planus in the same patient is highly unusual.
The co-presentation suggests a potential shared etiology or that these conditions may represent different clinical expressions of the same underlying pathogenetic process.

Implications:

This case challenges the classification of lichen nitidus and lichen planus as entirely separate entities.
Further research into the pathogenetic mechanisms linking lichen nitidus and lichen planus is warranted.
Understanding this association could lead to novel diagnostic and therapeutic strategies for both conditions.
