Summary
This case study details superfetation following gamete intrafallopian transfer (GIFT). Two embryos and two fetuses with significantly different developmental ages were observed, suggesting successive ovulations and implantation.
Area of Science:
- Reproductive Medicine
- Human Embryology
Background:
- Superfetation, the occurrence of a second conception during pregnancy, is exceptionally rare.
- Gamete intrafallopian transfer (GIFT) is an assisted reproductive technology procedure.
Observation:
- A 33-year-old woman experienced a spontaneous abortion at 15 weeks of gestation.
- Examination revealed two embryos (approx. 41 days) with a monochorionic diamniotic placenta and two fetuses/remnant (approx. 98 days) with a trichorionic triamniotic placenta.
Findings:
- A significant developmental age discrepancy between embryos and fetuses was noted.
- This discrepancy could not be attributed to growth retardation or embryo retention.
- The findings strongly suggest successive ovulations and separate implantations.
Implications:
- This case provides evidence for superfetation occurring after GIFT.
- It highlights the possibility of multiple ovulations and implantations in assisted reproduction.
- Understanding such events is crucial for managing pregnancies resulting from fertility treatments.
