Summary

Intraoperative radiation therapy (IORT) shows promise for aggressive thyroid cancer. This study found IORT effectively controlled thyroid bed tumors in all patients, with no specific complications observed.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To evaluate the efficacy and safety of an intraoperative radiation therapy (IORT) protocol for advanced thyroid carcinoma.
  • To assess tumor control and complications in patients with locally invasive or recurrent thyroid tumors.

  • A protocol for intraoperative radiation therapy (IORT) was developed for poorly differentiated non-anaplastic thyroid carcinoma.
  • Five patients with marked vascular/capsular invasion (3 primary, 2 recurrent) received IORT (4-10 GY) post-surgery, combined with percutaneous irradiation.
