    Area of Science:

    • Obstetrics and Gynecology
    • Perinatology

    Background:

    • Extramembranous pregnancy, characterized by amniotic fluid loss, presents significant challenges.
    • Early and continuous leakage of amniotic fluid (amniorrhoea) is associated with adverse pregnancy outcomes.

    Purpose of the Study:

    • To report a case of extramembranous pregnancy with significant amniotic fluid loss.
    • To discuss the management and prognosis of such pregnancies based on existing literature.

    Main Methods:

    • Case report of a pregnancy with intermittent and then continuous loss of liquor amnii.
    • Review of previous publications on extramembranous pregnancy and amniorrhoea.

    Main Results:

    • The infant was born at 31 weeks gestation but died 15 days postpartum due to respiratory distress syndrome.
    • The placenta was circumvallate with short, thick membranes, inadequately covering the fetus.

    Conclusions:

    • Extramembranous pregnancy with early and continuous amniorrhoea has a poor infant prognosis.
    • Interruption of pregnancy should be considered in early cases of significant amniotic fluid loss.
