  • Computed tomography (CT) commonly reveals calcification in the basal ganglia and subcortical white matter.
  • These calcified areas exhibit characteristic signal alterations on magnetic resonance imaging (MRI).

Findings:

  • Calcifications may present paradoxically increased signal intensity on T1-weighted MRI.
  • This is attributed to a surface-relaxation mechanism.
  • Conversely, these areas show decreased signal intensity on T2-weighted images.
